Meta Tags-
You may hear a lot about meta tags when you are creating and
advertising your website. Meta tags
are found in the source code (or invisible background) of each web
page. Meta tags are sets of instructions and/or identifiers for
search engine spiders to read which describe the content that is
included on your web page. The tags are used to describe the
document such as title, keywords and description. Often referred to
as simply tags, these snippets of information are the key to getting
users to your website.
Meta tags are a great way for webmasters to provide search engines
with information about their sites. Meta tags can be used to provide
information to all sorts of clients, and each system processes only
the meta tags they understand and ignores the rest. Meta tags are
added to the <head> section of your HTML page and generally look
like this:
<head>
<title>Website Creations- Website Menus</title>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=windows-1251"/>
<meta name="keywords" content="website menus, choose a menu style
for your website, types of navigation on websites, What is a CSS
menu, menu designs, DHTML menus, Interactive button menus, plain
text menus, menu styles, Website Creations, free online tutorials,
accept online payments, increase website traffic, add widgets, add
slideshows, add a favicon, understand google pagerank, Understand
website terminology, create websites, increase blog readers, use
website templates, advertise with us, create your own website"/>
<meta name="description" content="Your website menu is the
navigation system for your website and needs to work well for
visitors and robots
Other than the title tag, information in the head area of your web
pages is not seen by those viewing your pages in browsers. Instead,
meta information in this area is used to communicate information
that a human visitor may not be concerned with. Meta tags, for
example, can tell a browser what "character set" to use or whether a
web page has self-rated itself in terms of adult content.
The text you use in the title tag is one of the most important
factors in how a search engine may decide to rank your web page. In
addition, all major crawlers will use the text of your title tag as
the text they use for the title of your page in your listings.
The meta description tag allows you to influence the description of
your page in the crawlers that support the tag. The description
attribute provides a concise explanation of a Web page's content.
This allows the Web page authors to give a more meaningful
description for listings than might be displayed if the search
engine was unable to automatically create its own description based
on the page content. The description is often, but not always,
displayed on search engine results pages, so it can affect
click-through rates. Industry commentators have suggested that major
search engines also consider keywords located in the description
attribute when ranking pages. Almost all search engines recommend
the size of the description meta tagit to be shorter than 155
characters of plain text. |
